Temporary Installation in public space
location: San Sebastian – Donostia / Spain
material: wood / scaffolding construction / paint
size: 1600 x 1600 x 500 cm
year: 2004
Blue Octagon is a temporary installation on a square in San Sebastian in Spain. As a companion piece to White Wall and Pink Wall, the investigation into the creation of frames as a mode of looking stemming from photographic concepts is continued here. Distinct from these previous installations this work is conceived as a spatial eight cornered construction, mirroring the octagon square in three dimensional form, and thus not only isolates the passerby against a neutral background but also surrounds him within an abstract environment which as happens in a virtual space takes us temporarily out of our actual location. Blue Octagon is a pavilion in which the pedestrian is encouraged to spend time, take a break and observe people photographing each other against the stark blue monochrome background. The environment is additionally framed in this installation by means of the four gates which are left open in the design. Depending on the position which the passerby takes new perspectives are offered while cut out and framed views can be seen of the square outside, which captures transfixing yet fleeting images.
