Central Station is an early work within the oeuvre of
Korfmann.
The photos that make up the work are a registration of 3 minutes with
an old fashioned large format camera at Central Station in Amsterdam. Several
performers were asked to stand completely still during the shoot. Because of
the long shutter time only the people who stood still are clearly visible,
while the passersby that routinely pass through the station’s hall take on
vague or ephemeral shapes. Thus, in one image several time layers are imposed.
As often in the artists’ other projects, the work occurs on the border between
chance and staging. There is always an element of performance in her work, and
the completely still figures doubtless evoked curious responses from the
incidental passerby, which is also captured in the image.
