Flatten Image is a phrase familiar from the software
program Photoshop which refers to the command given for flattening the various
layers of a digital image, which can be manipulated separately, into the final
picture.
In this installation this principle is imposed onto an architectonic
construction: the physical layers of a news kiosk, which consists of the walls
and the proliferating information and advertisements on them, are flattened
into an equal surface by covering everything with white panels.
The usual
information with which a kiosk is covered is hidden, repressed in fact, what
results in a peculiarly estranged image. The information with which we are
usually bombarded is now replaced by an empty space in which new meanings can
be projected, emphasizing the actual determining space of information even more
dramatically.
