Look at Katrin Korfmann’s intensely colorful Castells for the first time, from a distance, and it’s a riveting, vibrational image, more abstract than representational, more painterly than photographic. Step up closer, however, and you discover, with surprise, that this is actually an aerial photograph of hundreds of people engaged in some intricate and energetic, yet
mysterious, activity that you can’t really place; indeed these individuals appear to form a complex, multihued organism, with both microscopic and macrocosmic suggestions…
